All along the border of the Sahara desert, African countries face the challenge of increasing desertification. The encroaching Sahara desert results in a direct increase in poverty, especially among populations who rely on agriculture and livestock as their primary sources of income. More than 75% of the populations inhabiting these regions are negatively affected by the onset of desertification. The Great Green Wall initiative was created to fight the advancing Sahara desert by planting trees and offering a small supplemental source of income for participating villagers. The program also provides basic medical services, literacy classes and basic computer courses.[endtext]
